For many years, Alzheimer’s disease was once diagnosed after the death of the individual and an autopsy of the brain was performed. Once the brain was analyzed, scientists were able to diagnose the disease by identifying specific characteristics such as plaques and tangles. The development of medications and preventive treatments has been difficult due to the inability of identifying the disease prior to death. As time and research progressed, neurological and neuropsychological features and auxiliary tests such as neuro-imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analyses were developed, in hopes of identifying such characteristics, before the death of the individual. These images allowed scientists to see the presence of intracellular neuro-fibrillary tangles. These tangles consist of hyperphosphorylated tau-protein and extra-cellular disposition of β-amyloid (Aβ ) (Jellinger KA, Bancher C, 1998). The hypothesis suggests generation and tissue deposition of Aβ (β-amyloid) could be the direct link for degeneration and the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The hypothesis also indicates that the Aβ-induces neuro-degeneration, that directly causes toxicity to the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway (Deshpande A, Mina E, Glabe C, Busciglio J., 2006).
